River Rat Race

Millers River, from Athol to Orange
Join in the fun at the annual River Rat Race. Start the day off with a morning parade and then the five-mile canoe race down a fast-moving, sometimes icy cold stretch of the Millers River from Athol to Orange, described by some as "the world’s zaniest canoe race."
The parade begins at 9:30 a.m., the race at 1 p.m. The award ceremony will be at 5 p.m. at the River Front Park on East River St. in Orange or (in the event of inclement weather) in the Orange Armory on East Main St.
There is a kayak race on Sunday, April 13, at 11 a.m..
Specific information and registration forms are available at the event website. Racers can also register in person at the office of the Athol Daily News, 225 Exchange St., Athol, or can call 978-249-3535.
Those wishing to participate in the parade should call WJDF radio station, 978-544-5335.
Vendor permits are available through the Board of Health, 978-249-7934 in Athol and 978-544-1107 in Orange.
Race and vendor fees are charged; spectators watch for free.
