Phillipston Wildlife Management Area

Queen Lake Rd., Phillipston, Petersham, Barre & Hubbardston, MA

Gentle to moderate slopes traversed by several brooks, the land dominated by mixed forests and a range of wetlands.

Description:

Its 3,300 acres extending south from Route 101, the Phillipston Wildlife Management Area is graced by gentle to moderate slopes and level wetlands and traversed by portions of the Burncoat River, Moccasin Brook, and Wine Brook. The land is dominated by mixed hardwood and conifer forest, but also includes wooded swamps, open marshes, two lovely ponds, and several beaver impoundments.

These waters support fur-bearers and native brook trout, while grouse, woodcock, deer, coyote, snowshoe hare, cottontail rabbit, turkey and other species share the upland. Stocked pheasant can be found in season. There are parking areas at Baker Lane in Phillipston and Narrow Lane in Petersham, and a canoe put-in on Queen Lake at the Phillipston end of Narrow Lane. Baker Lane is now closed to traffic and makes a fine hiking trail through part of the WMA. Just north of Route 101 lies Popple Camp Wildlife Management Area.

Directions:

From Rte. 2 take Exit 21 and follow Rtes. 2AW and 101S. Continue south on Rte 101 after the split, to Bakers Rd. entrance on left.
