Photo: Royalston Falls by The Trustees of Reservations Royalston FallsFalls Road, Royalston, MA Falls Brook carves natural sandstone bridges before plunging 45 feet into a granite basin. Description:A 19th-century geologist described Royalston Falls as "one of the finest indeed in the state." A gem of the Tully Trail (and of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail), it lies sheltered by a seemingly wild, forested area. In truth, this land in the past was cleared for farming and hosted town picnics and even a casino with a dance band. Falls Brooks creates the falls, carving natural sandstone bridges before plunging 45 feet into a pool framed by rocks, ferns, and cardinal flowers. The top of the falls can be accessed on both sides, but reaching the bottom requires off-trail hiking and wading. Directions:
To east entrance: From Royalston center, take Rte. 68 north 1.4 mi. Bear right onto Falls Road and continue for 3.2 mi. Last 0.8 mi. requires 4-wheel drive/high clearance, or park and hike in.
