River Rat Race & Parade

Millers River, Athol, MA

Fun for paddlers and spectators - a canoe race down the Millers River from Athol to Orange, after a morning parade in Athol.

Description:

A five-mile canoe race down a fast-moving, sometimes icy cold stretch of the Millers River from Athol to Orange, described by some as "the world’s zaniest canoe race."

Organized by the Athol and Orange Lions Clubs, this annual springtime party begins with the River Rat Promenade parade at 10 a.m., celebrating the race, area residents, and the region. The race begins at 1 p.m. - the first challenge is to get through the crowd under the 30-foot span of the South Main St. bridge. Celebrations continue about a half hour later after racers arrive at Orange’s River Front Park. Great fun for hundreds of entrants and thousands of spectators!

See our Events Calendar in late winter for this year's details.

Directions:

Parade starts on east side of Athol. Race starts on Millers River just upstream of the Main Street Bridge in Athol.
