Birch Hill Wildlife Management Area

Winchendon Rd., Royalston, MA
(508) 835-3607

Rivers and lakes meet at this diverse recreation spot, the waters stocked with trout, the land with fowl.

Description:

With 7,400 acres in a number of parcels, the Birch Hill Wildlife Management Area includes diverse habitats - mixed hardwood and conifer forests, open fields, brush lands, and shallow-water grass hummock marshes. Portions of the Millers River and the Otter River flow through the area, both stocked with trout, and native brook trout thrive in numerous cold-water streams. Other wildlife found here includes deer, red and gray fox, snowshoe hare, aquatic fur-bearers, great blue heron, waterfowl, various raptors, turkey, grouse, woodcock, stocked pheasant, and numerous nongame species. This WMA abuts the even larger Birch Hill Dam area, and together these lands offer significant protection to the Millers River watershed and recreation to human visitors.

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 19, and go left on Rte.2A/202. Take the first right onto Royalston Rd. and go left on Rte. 68. Go through S. Royalston center, and turn right on Winchendon Rd. to WMA sign on right.
