Town of RoyalstonRoyalston, MA An outstanding town center in an area with three lovely waterfalls and two recreational areas surrounding dams. Description:The flag of Royalston bears the motto “where many waters fall,” celebrating the three lovely waterfalls in town—Doane’s Falls, Spirit Falls, and Royalston Falls. (The latter is also one of the attractions along the Tully Trail and the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail.) In modern times the motto could pay tribute, too, to Tully Dam and Birch Hill Dam, which control the fall of the Millers River and whose surrounding lands provide magnificent recreational opportunities. Streams flow in Chase Memorial Forest and in a number of wildlife management areas. All those waters hint at Royalston’s industrial past, when numerous small mills dotted the landscape and major ones made use of the Millers River in the South Royalston area. They also hint at the rugged terrain of the 42-square-mile town, and thus of the sheep pastures that replaced the forests in the first century of European settlement. Today the forest has returned, surrounding the few remaining farms, the cheerful village in South Royalston, and the graceful town center, one of the loveliest in New England, where outstanding Federal and Greek Revival houses and public buildings surround a generous town common. Founded in 1765 as Royalshire, Royalston today is a quiet place, its 1,500 residents committed to preserving and celebrating its historic beauty, natural wonders, and sense of community. Directions:From Rte. 2, take Exit 22 and follow Rte. 68 north through South Royalston into Royalston Center. Contact:
