Town of Petersham

Petersham, MA

That loveliest of combinations - a town center of dramatic beauty plus vast areas of varied, permanently protected land inviting explorers from near and far.

Description:

Petersham (pronounced “Peter’s ham”) offers that loveliest of combinations—a town center of dramatic beauty, with magnificent mansions and public buildings surrounding a large common, and vast areas of varied, permanently protected land inviting explorers from near and far.

These include part of the Quabbin Reservoir lands and the former center of the town of Dana; the Petersham and Federated Women’s Club State Forests; the North Common Meadow, Brooks Woodland Preserve, and Swift River Reservation, all owned by The Trustees of Reservations; Harvard Forest, a research site of Harvard University and home of the world-famous Fisher Museum; Earthlands, offering programs in sustainable living; and a Massachusetts Audubon Society sanctuary.

Petersham was incorporated in 1754, and over the years has had a strong agricultural history, hosted a number of small businesses, and served as a summer getaway for wealthy industrialists from elsewhere. For many years the dramatic Nichewaug Inn did a thriving business on the common, and now a new owner has plans to renovate the structure. Two other small inns have gained regional fame.

At 68 square miles, Petersham is the third largest town in the state, but its population is only 1,200. Many artists and craftspeople live here, some displaying their wares at the Petersham Craft Center. Folks gather at the Petersham Country Store and at numerous community and cultural events, including concerts at the bandstand on the common. Local news and events are also featured on a community website.

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 17 and follow Rte. 32 south into Petersham Center.
