Town of Phillipston

Phillipston, MA

A serene town center serving a neighborly community, with an impressive array of protected lands to explore.

Description:

The Worcester Telegram once described Phillipston Center this way: “The town center is probably the quietest spot in Central Massachusetts…. A few white buildings, including the graceful Congregational Church, form a circle. And that’s all. Grass and trees predominate. Near the old town hall stands the ancient public pump. Those in the area make it a point to stop off, give the handle a few energetic pumps, and drink from the old font.”

Quiet, yes, and absolutely beautiful, a serene town center serving a neighborly community and one with an impressive array of protected lands to explore: the abutting Phillipston and Popple Camp Wildlife Management Areas, the Elliott Laurel Reservation, the Fox Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, the Ellinwood-O’Brien Tree farm, and Prospect Hill, the highest point in town, with a panoramic view from the top of a fire tower. In the northern part of town, Red Apple Farm affords a visit to a magnificent orchard and access to the scenic Thousand-Acre Swamp, and in the southern part, Queen Lake offers a refreshing dip. Residents and visitors revel at the annual Pumpkin Fair and its pumpkin weigh-in, where size is what counts.

Phillipston was established in 1786 as Gerry after Elbridge Gerry, a prominent Revolutionary figure who later became James Madison’s vice president. After a number of controversies (it was this Gerry whose name lives on in the word gerrymander), residents voted to rename the town. About 1,500 people life in the 24 square miles of Phillipston’s steep hills and sloping valleys.
