Town of WendellWendell, MA Ab eclectic range of homes, a marvelous town center, and a magnificent state forest - indeed a great town to visit. Description:Founded in 1781, Wendell is a hill town in two senses—hills dominate its landscape, and the peaceful town center is built on a hill, visibly falling away to the north, east, and south. Fewer than 1,000 residents inhabit its 32 square miles. A drive through the mostly forested roads of Wendell reveals an eclectic range and style of homes, from the historic to the offbeat.
The charming town green (complete with bandstand), the Half Moon Coffee House (exciting monthly dessert-and-music events), the Wendell Meetinghouse (undergoing loving restoration), and one general store in Wendell Depot and another a little south of the center provide community gathering places for both planned occasions and informal chat. Wendell State Forest provides numerous recreational opportunities, including one local terminus of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (the M&M) and, through the abutting Millers River Wildlife Management Area, to the Millers River, which forms the northern border of Wendell. The town has recently added Fiske Pond to its conservation holdings, and a resident has donated astounding tracts of land to the Massachusetts Audubon Society for a refuge known as the Whetstone Wood Wildlife Sanctuary. Directions:From Rte. 2, take Exit 15 and follow Rte. 122 north into Orange Center. Turn left on West Main St. (Rte. 2A) and watch for sign to Wendell. Turn left onto Wendell Depot Rd. and proceed into center. Contact:
