Quabbin Gates 26 & 27

East Main Street, New Salem, MA

A short loop trail about 2 miles long with a lovely view of the Quabbin Reservoir and some of its islands, as well as interesting foundations.

Description:

A short loop trail about 2 miles long yields a lovely view of the Quabbin Reservoir and some of its islands, as well as interesting foundations. From Gate 26, pass a logging road on the right and walk straight about ¾ of a mile, heading downhill. At the intersection, continue straight to the water’s edge; go a little further south along the shore for an even better view from a spit of land. Return to the intersection; bear right (north) along the shore and then left heading inland; turn left at the next intersection and exit at Gate 27. You’ll pass cellar holes on your right on each of the long legs of the trail. (Longer loop trails that include legs along active roads connect Gates 26 & 27 with Gates 28-30 to the north and with Gates 22-25 in the south; consult a map or guidebook for details.)

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 16 and go south on Rte. 202 to sign for New Salem Center, on left. Continue to end of East Main St. at Gate 26.
