Northfield Mountain Environmental & Recreation Center

Miles of hiking and cross-country trails, plus a rock climbing area. Visitor Center. Picnic tables by the Connecticut River and seasonal riverboat cruises.

Description:

Amid woods and fields, slopes and valleys, Northfield Mountain offers a guided nature trail, the Rose Ledge rock climbing area, and 25 miles of hiking trails, including an overlook at the 1,100-foot summit. In the winter those trails are beautifully groomed for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, with runs suitable for novice, intermediate and expert skiers. A shelter called the Chocolate Pot in a sunny mid-mountain spot offers a fire and snacks on weekends. 

The Visitor Center offers maps, interpretive displays, and occasional programs, including orienteering. The Riverview area on the west side of Rte. 63 has a pavilion and tables for picnicking on the banks of the Connecticut River and a dock for seasonal riverboat cruises to the French King Gorge, narrated by experienced naturalists. 

Nearby are the Barton Cove Recreation & Camping Area, with other recreational opportunities. All of these facilities are owned by Northeast Utilities as part of its federal license for a pumped-storage hydroelectric plant on the mountain.

Directions:

From Rte. 2 in Erving, go 2 miles north on Rte. 63 to main entrance, on right.
