Brooks Woodland Preserve: Swift River Tract

Miles of trails through fields and forest and along river and swamp, with glimpses of both glacial and human history.

Description:

The Swift River Tract is the largest parcel in the magnificent 700-acre Brooks Woodland Preserve, managed to recreate the pre-colonial forest but with a few areas around old cellar holes maintained as open fields. Miles of trails weave across the fields, through the woods, and along the East Branch of the Swift River, Moccasin Brook, and beaver-dammed swamps. Cascades of boulders attest to the distant glacial past, Indian grinding stones to the Native American presence here, and old stone walls to the more recent agricultural heritage. (Also visit the Roaring Brook Tract and the Connor’s Pond Tract.)

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 17 and go south on Rte. 32 through Petersham center to 32/122 intersection. Continue south 1.5 miles, turn left on Quaker Dr., and continue to entrance on left.
