Glen Freden

PO Box 64, Royalston, MA

Description:

A 2003 recipient of the New England Society of American Foresters (NESAF) Austin Carey Practicing Professional Forester Award, Glenn Freden works with 150 clients and manages 15,000 acres of forestland in almost every town in the North Quabbin. Working alone or with an assistant Glenn offers a full range of forestland management options for landowners including Chapter 61 (Current Use) and Stewardship planning for managing timber, wildlife and recreation resources.

After receiving a B.S. in forest ecology from the University of Rhode Island Glenn continued on to receive a Masters in Forestry Science (M.F.S.) from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Sciences in 1977.

Glenn's approach to forest management is to maximize the long-term productivity of all forest amenities. He most appreciates working in areas that have not been high-graded? or otherwise degraded by previous activities.

A one-tree logging job is one of Glenn?s most memorable experiences in his 22 years as a consulting forester. When a client (also a neighbor and friend) asked Glenn for help to cut a tree his daughter had been contracted to carve as a totem pole, Glenn had them leave the surrounding tall pines. There was a group of impressive pines which I could have cut, but thought [the landowner] might have a later use for since he is a timber framer. I arranged a 1-tree logging job for the totem pole, which turned out really well.
