Swift River Reservation: Slab City Tract

Barre Rd., Petersham, MA
(978) 840-4446

The Slab City Tract offers a fascinating combination of field and forest, lowland river and highland vista, and connects with Harvard Forest land.

Description:

The Slab City Tract offers a fascinating combination of field and forest, lowland river and highland vista. The trail bearing left around an old cellar hole and across the field (itself an old stagecoach road) leads into the woods and to a beautiful walk along the Swift River, shadowed by towering old trees. Just before a gate, a trail going up the hill to the right comes to an old logging road that heads downhill back to the parking area. A cross-trail near the top of the logging road leads to other conservation land, including part of Harvard Forest; an obscure spur to the right, near a rock outcrop, affords a wonderful view of Connor’s Pond and the forest beyond. (Also visit the other sections of the Swift River Reservation, the Nichewaug Tract and the Davis Tract.)

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 17, Rte. 32. Drive south through Petersham center to the 32/122 intersection. Continue south for about 2 miles. Connor's Pond is visible on left; entrance to Slab City Tract is on right.
