Mike Mauri represents private owners of both small and large woodlots in the North Quabbin, and provides forestry services directly to several North Quabbin towns and institutions. Management planning (including Ch. 61 and Stewardship Plans and value appraisals) and selling timber for landowners are Mike's primary forestry activities. Mike is also Southern New England Coordinator of the Forest Stewards Guild (www.foreststewardsguild.org), a national network of progressive-minded foresters.
While completing an M.S. in forestry at UMass (1993-1996), Mike trained under consulting forester Glenn Freden, gathering valuable practical experience needed to start his own consulting business. Always looking for ways to explain forestry ideas to woodlot owners, Mike edited The Woodland Steward for five years and wrote dozens of articles about woodlot management.
Mike's approach to forest management is to identify special features in each woodlot -- sometimes a single tree, sometimes a large area -- and make sure they are protected or enhanced in the bigger scheme of sustainable management. Mike is particularly interested in enhancing the value that good individual trees and good stands of timber can grow over extended periods of time and explaining this process to landowners.
Recently, Mike wrote and published a 24-page booklet for landowners called "A Woodlot Owner's Guide: How to Get More Out of Owning Woodland in Massachusetts."
