Viewers tour the North Quabbin region to meet foresters, loggers, sawmill operators, and woodworkers who demonstrate the process of developing an end product from standing timber and the benefits of using local wood.

Description:

In 2006 the North Quabbin Woods Project produced the video, “Local Wood: From Forest to Finished Product in the North Quabbin Region, MA.” Viewers tour the North Quabbin region to meet foresters, loggers, sawmill operators, and woodworkers who demonstrate the process of developing an end product from standing timber and the benefits of using local wood.

The video has been distributed to community television stations throughout New England, to local libraries, schools, and organizations, and is also available for sale from Athol Orange Community Television, Inc.  (You may contact AOTV at 978-249-4470).

The idea for the 40-minute video was based on actual tours North Quabbin Woods has hosted for architects and builders, and from a field trip developed in 2004 with the Ralph C. Mahar High School’s woodworking classes.

The video begins with foresters Glenn Freden and Derek Beard, who describe forest management and preparations for timber harvests. Logger Jake Doody and Fred Heyes of Heyes Forest Products exhibit two different timber harvest operations. Tours of the Heyes Forest Products’ sawmill in Orange and Cowls Lumber in Amherst are followed by visits with Michael Humphries Woodworking, Steve Smith Woodworking, and Tom Musco of Royalston Oak Timber Frames for a glimpse of end products created from local wood.

The video was created with support from the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association Institute, the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, the New England Forestry Foundation, and AOTV13. The video was filmed by Bob Parks of Athol and was edited, produced, directed, and narrated by Scott Maslansky of North Quabbin Woods.
