Warwick State Forest & Sheomet Pond

Warwick, MA
978-544-3939

Multiple tracts and trails, plus the popular Sheomet Pond (Clubhouse Pond).

Description:

Warwick State Forest has over 25 miles of dirt roads crisscrossing 7,000 acres in five different tracts, some of which abut Mount Grace State Forest. A portion of the white-blazed Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (the M&M) traverses both forests. No official map exists of Warwick State Forest, but many trails can be determined from street and topographic maps.

Swimmers and anglers enjoy the serene beauty of the 33-acre Sheomet Pond, created by a dam on Tully Brook originally constructed around the time of the Civil War. There are no lifeguards, but there is a canoe launch area further along the road from the main parking area. The lake is also known as Clubhouse Pond, paying homage to a private sports club that once owned the land. Other lovely wetlands in Warwick State Forest include Richards Reservoir and Richards Mill Pond to the west off Richmond Rd. and Stevens Swamp, actually a large mill pond fringed by bog and swamp, a short hike from White Rd.

Directions:

To Sheomet Pond: From Athol center, go north on Exchange St. across bridge. Turn left on Pequog Ave., and go 6.4 mi. Turn right at sign on dirt road. Follow to lake.
