Wendell State Forest & Ruggles Pond

Montague Rd., Wendell, MA
(413) 659-3797

Access to Metacomet-Monadnock Trail and other hiking and mountain bike trails. Groomed cross-country ski trails, overlook, waterfalls.

Description:

Miles of dirt roads and hiking trails, several streams, a cranberry bog, and two ponds - one for swimming, one for fishing - make the 7,900-acre Wendell State Forest a fantastic place to explore. Outdoor enthusiasts pursue many activities - there's even a ballfield and a pavilion for group events. Groomed trails and a warming room make winter sports fun, an interesting quarter-mile loop trail encircles the 10-acre Ruggles Pond and its swampy eastern side, and the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail passes through the forest. On the north the forest abuts the 66-acre Millers River Wildlife Management Area and thus the Miller's River itself. Cultural historians can investigate Depression-era CCC work in the park. Also of note is the Hidden Valley Memorial Forest, accessible only through the forest.

Directions:

From Wendell Center, go about 3 miles west on Montague Rd. to parking and headquarters on right.
