Elliott Laurel Reservation

Queen Lake Rd., Rte. 101, Phillipston, MA

Extensive mountain laurel thicket with magnificent white blooms in late spring. Short loop trail wanders below cathedral of hemlocks.

Description:

The 33-acre Elliott Laurel preserve offers a quiet, one-mile loop trail that begins in an open field, climbs a rocky hill with a wonderful view, and then passes through woodland and down to a maple swamp. The return journey cuts through a forest of huge white pine, graced with the mountain laurel for which the preserve is named. In mid-June the area glows with the laurel’s pink buds and white flowers.

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 21 (Rte. 2A west) for 1.1 miles. Turn left onto Rte. 101 south for 3.9 miles to entrance on right. From the Rtes. 32/101 intersection in Petersham, take Rte. 101 north 3.6 miles to entrance on left.
