Wawbeek Rock

Hastings Pond Rd., Warwick, MA

An awe-inspiring glacial erratic, with an inscription as a human touch.

Description:

In geologic terms, Wawbeek Rock is an erratic, an enormous boulder deposited on the land some 12,000 years ago by the action of glaciers. In 1916, however, human beings appropriated the rock when the Athol YMCA, which had a summer camp in the area, dubbed it Wawbeek—Algonquin for “big rock”—and had it inscribed with that name and an inscription from Genesis: “In the Beginning—God.” Today, not far from the center of the peaceful center of Warwick, Wawbeek Rock still inspires awe, both at the power of nature and at the work of human hands.

Directions:

From Rte. 2, take Exit 15 and follow Rte. 122 north into Orange center. Turn left onto West Main St. (Rte. 2A), continue to Rte. 78, and turn right. Just before the center of Warwick, take a sharp right onto Hastings Pond Rd.
