Town of Warwick - Warwick Warwick, MA

To many observers, Warwick, founded in 1763, reflects quintessentially Yankee New England in its look, its feel, and its ways. Its charming town center is the focus of a wide range of community events, including an annual Old Home Days and Arts Show , and its fewer than 1,000 residents celebrate a sense of community. In addition to graceful homes and public buildings, the town common also boasts a stack of millstones from an 18 th -century gristmill and a year-round fountain that flows one-half mile from a stream on Mount Grace . Near the center is the curious Wawbeek Rock, a huge glacial erratic inscribed with a biblical quotation.

Swimmers and anglers enjoy the serene beauty of the 33-acre Sheomet Pond, created by a dam on Tully Brook originally constructed around the time of the Civil War. There are no lifeguards, but there is a canoe launch area further along the road from the main parking area. The lake is also known as Clubhouse Pond, paying homage to a private sports club that once owned the land. Other lovely wetlands in Warwick State Forest include Richards Reservoir and Richards Mill Pond to the west off Richmond Rd. and Stevens Swamp , actually a large mill pond fringed by bog and swamp, a short hike from White Rd.

Wawbeek Rock - Warwick Hastings Pond Rd.
Warwick, MA

In geologic terms, Wawbeek Rock is an erratic, an enormous boulder deposited on the land some 12,000 years ago by the action of glaciers. In 1916, however, human beings appropriated the rock when the Athol YMCA, which had a summer camp in the area, dubbed it Wawbeek—Algonquin for “big rock”—and had it inscribed with that name and an inscription from Genesis: “In the Beginning—God.” Today, not far from the center of the peaceful center of Warwick , Wawbeek Rock still inspires awe, both at the power of nature and at the work of human hands.

At 1,617 feet above sea level, Mount Grace is the high point of Mount Grace State Forest and, indeed, of the whole North Quabbin region. It was a popular downhill ski area for several decades during the mid-20th century. The now unused fire tower atop the mountain affords breathtaking views of Sunny Valley in Winchester, New Hampshire; Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, New Hampshire; part of the charming center of the town of Warwick; and ridges, fields, and forests galore.
