Powerhouse Industrial
Jim Fountain loves wood. "I love it in all forms," he says. "I love it on a log truck, I love it in a wood pile, I love it in a dumpster. When I see a pile of boards, I’m inspired to build things!" Working from a small shop in his garage, he makes all kinds of things out of locally harvested and recycled wood, ranging from beautiful cutting boards and picture frames to small furniture and garden fixtures.
Jim grew up in Athol, where his father was a carpenter. He worked in furniture restoration in other parts of the country, including a Shaker village and a local history museum, before returning to the North Quabbin in 1993 and setting up his own small shop. He now splits his time between woodwork and caring for his two children.
Jim sells his work mostly by word-of-mouth, though he has started attending craft shows to sell his cutting boards and frames and generate orders for furniture. His commitment to using sustainably grown local wood or found and recycled wood attracts many customers who are committed to environmental and community sustainability, and his woodworking skills and ability to match the vision of his customers keep them coming back!
