Sammis Woodworking

"Working one on one with the customer throughout the design process allows me to create one-of-a-kind pieces of quality."

Jon Sammis didn't start out to be a maker of custom furniture. Initially he was a cabinetmaker who created one-of-a-kind work for his family in his spare time, but soon a clientelle noticed his furniture and began placing orders.

Sammis prefers using a combination of exotic veneers and solid wood, although he does sometimes turn to domestic species such as curly cherry and walnut. He assembles his work using a wide range of traditional joinery, including splined miters, mortises and tenons, and dovetails.

He encourages buyers of custom furniture to keep records of the features they would like to see in the furniture they'll order. Those records might take the form of magazine clippings or sketches or verbal descriptions. "Then when the time comes we can pick and choose the details to design your ultimate custom piece."
