John Burk is a freelance nature/outdoor photographer and writer from Petersham. He has contributed to the Natural New England magazine, coauthored the recent 'Twenty Years, Twenty Hikes' guide produced by the Mount Grace Land Trust, and has contributed to a variety of other projects and institutions. His recent projects include: the AMC Massachusetts Trail Guide and Best Day Hikes near Boston, Massachusetss Covered Bridges, A Viewers Guide to New England Wildlife, New England's Natural Wonders, and a photo book about Central Massachusetts.
John worked on a variety of projects at Harvard Forest for 10 years, including landscape research on timber harvesting, historical forest composition, land ownership patterns, and primary accounts of the New England landscape. He also managed the archives and library which includes a unique collection of landscape records. He holds an MA in regional studies from the University of Maine, with a specialization in environmental history and policy. In addition to exploring central Massachusetts and New England, John has traveled to a number of natural areas including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia, Great Smoky Mountain, Everglades, Haleakala (Hawaii), Acadia, and Badlands National Parks.
